Sustainable Fashion Brand- Stella McCartney

We have talked about sustainable living and adopting sustainable fashion. It seems to be a little complicated but there are brands that are making this challenging task their priority because they are aware of the environmental concerns.

When we talk about sustainable fashion, we can’t ignore the work of the fashion designer Stella McCartney. She launched her brand with her name Stella McCartney in 2001. The brand has been known for its effort to make a change even before sustainable lifestyles and ethical fashion was even talked about. Stella McCartney is a vegetarian brand that has never used leather, fur or skins in our products. Stella McCartney continuously develops and engages with new ways to reduce environmental impacts, using innovative techniques throughout the supply chain and designs. This luxurious brand is genuinely concerned about the environment and their efforts are visible in their actions. It is making constant efforts to improve and create sustainable fashion.

Stella McCartney is a perfect example of how fashion and sustainability can go hand in hand. Recently at the G7 summit, Stella McCartney called the fashion industry “one of the most polluting in the world” and added, “My goal is to drive change, encourage investments and create a lasting difference through incentives supporting the next generation”. She further added “I hope the G7 Summit will translate our message into policies bringing us closer to creating a cruelty-free society that is kinder to all creatures, Mother Earth, and each other.

“We are committed to always being responsible, honest and accountable today, with a positive impact on people, the planet and all its creatures so that we can protect it for tomorrow.”

One such brand is none other than Stella McCartney. Fashion is one the industry which has a major impact on the environment and co-existing species. In the hunt for a fashionable lifestyle, we somehow have forgotten has are actions are impacting the environment with our carbon footprints. We can emphasize enough that making environmental

How Stella McCartney Is Being Sustainable?

Stella McCartney

1. No Animal Leather, Skin and Fur

Since 2001, the very first day of its launch, Stella McCartney has made environmental conscious choices by saying no to the leather in her products. Not just leather, her brand focussed on no animal fur and no animal skin products. This is a big step towards the ethical approach in fashion where the brand acknowledges and respects the co-existence of other species on the planet. Hence to meet the requirements of leather, the brand uses mushroom leather and produces vegan bags. In 2018, they released the first vegan Stan Smith and created the first handbag made by Bold Thread’s Mylo Mushroom leather.

2. Use Of Organic Cotton

Stella McCartney brand started using organic cotton in 2008. This ensures that the use of non-toxic chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides is eliminated from agriculture. This improves soil health and furthermore protects the environment from various forms of pollution.

3. 100% Free From Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Products

The brand has gone complete PVC free. PVS is known to be one of the deadliest plastic on the planet. It contains many harmful chemicals such as phthalates, dioxins, ethylene dichloride etc. The production of PVC releases dioxins as byproducts. Dioxins are toxic and dangerous by-products. In 2010, Stella McCartney went complete PVC free understanding how dangerous this could be to humans, animals as well as the environment.

4.100% Sustainable Viscose

Sustainable viscose is yet another thing Stella McCartney came up with in order to protect the environment. They use 100% sustainable viscose which is an eco-friendly alternative.

5. Ceased The Use Of Cashmere

Cashmere has a high impact on the environment and therefore the brand has decided to cease the use of virgin cashmere. Instead, they use Re.Verso, re-engineered cashmere yarn. This is made in Italy from pre-consumer waste. and is said to offer a 92% reduction in environmental impact when compared to virgin cashmere.

6. Biodegradable Denim

We all love denim and Stella McCartney uses stretchable and biodegradable denim in her products. Denim is essential and the use of biodegradable denim is a big step towards helping the environment.

7. Sustainable Eyewear Collection

The brand has come up with sustainable eyewear. They use bio-lenses for the glasses in addition to frames made up of bio-acetate.

8. Recycled Nylon and Polyester

Stella McCarney used recycled nylon and polyester in their products. Instead of regular nylons, they use  ECONYL, regenerated nylon. It is a form of nylon that is entirely made up of waste such as plastic waste fabric and fishing nets from the ocean are recycled and regenerated into new nylon yarns. On the other hand, recycled polyester all over the globe is recycled from plastic bottles. These recycled materials are good and have less impact on the environment.

9. Paper and Carboards

The brand is very mindful of the creation as well as the packaging of its products. Since 2014, they have ensured that all the paper and cardboard used in any process of manufacturing or packaging are certified as sustainable.

10. Biodegradable Products

Other than using biodegradable denim, the brand also uses biodegradable soles made from a bioplastic called APINAT. The APINAT will degrade on its own when it is placed in mature compost. The shoes are not only vegan but also eco friendly.

11. Energy-efficient

Stella McCartney aims to use energy sources such as solar panels and LEDs which are energy efficient. Using solar energy is a great way of preventing the use and overconsumption of non-renewable sources of energy.
