Originated in the subcontinent of India nearly around 3000 years ago, Ayurveda is regarded as the Science of Healing. Immensely popular in India, Ayurveda is now gaining immense popularity in the world. The term Ayurveda consists of two words, Ayu (life) and Veda (knowledge) and deals with health and well-being. In short, the term Ayurveda means “knowledge of life.”

Ayurveda believes that the prevention of any disease or illness by establishing balance in mind, body and soul is important. Within the body, there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. When one understands the nature and structure of disorder, one can re-establish order.

Ayurveda lays a strong emphasis on the prevention of the disease. The main principle behind this is working on the root of the problem rather than on the symptoms caused by the problem. The balance between mind, body and soul is important and ayurvedic works in the direction of establishing and maintaining this balance internally and externally.

How To Establish Balance

Ayurveda has three basic types of dosha or functional principles that are present in everyone and everything namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The 5 elements that include space, air, water, fire and earth with these three doshas constitute the principles of Ayurveda.

Energy is required by any living being for everything. Whether it is a body’s internal activity or creating a movement externally energy is important. The energy also enables the movement of fluids, metabolism and nutrients in our bodies. This whole process allows the body to function. Vata is the energy of movement. The pitta is the energy of digestion or metabolism.

Whereas, Kapha is regarded as the energy of lubrication and structure. 

Every living being poses these Vata, Pitta and Kalpa. Excessiveness or deficiency of these doshas causes disorder or illness. Moreover, the presence of toxins can also cause illness. Learning how to balance the body, mind and consciousness requires an understanding of how these three elements- Vata, Pitta and Kapha work and function together.

Changes in lifestyle, diet, stress, exercise, and pollution affect body activities leading to imbalance and thus causing illness.
